Key Takeaways:

  • The only resolution in 2024 should be ensuring you have healthy and happy employees.
  • “Holistic Health” includes physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects of an employee’s overall health.
  • Healthy employees can equate to greater engagement and increased productivity.

In general, many business owners would likely agree that having healthy and happy employees would be a good indicator of having a successful and healthy business. If people and cultures can make good businesses bad or bad businesses good, then shouldn’t we all strive to have happier people and great cultures in order to have the best business we can possibly have? Here’s why having happy and healthy employees matters.

The Domino Effect

When employees are healthy, meaning they are positively managing the physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects of their lives, they tend to be happier. When employees are happier and feeling good about their personal and professional lives, they tend to be more engaged at work, where greater engagement can equal greater productivity. This ultimately means they are equipped to handle stressful situations better than unhealthy employees and their interactions with customers are more impactful in a positive way. This impact is ultimately felt on the bottom line of the business.

The Model Employee

But what does a holistically healthy employee look like? When speaking of healthy employees, we are speaking of key aspects of what make up a healthy life including physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. The model employee who is holistically healthy in these key areas tends to have some of the following attributes:

  • They tend to be more health conscious – physically active and eat healthier.
  • They are inclined to handle stress in positive and appropriate ways thus reducing the risk of blowups or burnout.
  • It has been found that healthy and happy employees engage in the company culture, not just attending company events but also by building relationships with other employees.
  • Happy employees take advantage of activities that make them feel good about themselves, their company, and their community such as volunteering activities.
  • They take advantage of company benefits and perks as available which in turn helps them to feel supported and understood by their company.

The One Resolution that Matters

As the new year approaches, there will be an assortment of key metrics set to ensure a successful 2024. However, the argument could be made that the one resolution that should matter in the new year should be ensuring your business is hitting on all cylinders when it comes to achieving holistically healthy employees.

How would employees describe where they work and how they feel about the company? Do you offer programs or opportunities that support employees as they pursue healthy lifestyles? Make it a goal in 2024 to ensure you are developing holistically healthy employees – your bottom-line and having healthy and happy people depends on it!
